On organisation

I’m disorganised. There, I’ve said it for the world to see. I’ve always been this way; a messy bedroom as a child and an untidy life as an adult. The only way I was ever truly organised – and even then there were lapses – was when I set myself a nice timetable. I had them at school, I used them for revision, and now I intend to use them to help me make a positive change in my life.

Now, I really do enjoy the making of a good timetable; a nice, tidy colour-coded grid. I’m not quite as obsessed as everyone’s favourite smeg head Arnold Rimmer, but there’s just something appealing about planning in a visual way. It’s always fun to grab those colouring pencils and stretch some creative muscles, even in something as mundane as the pursuit of a tidy life.

I’ve chosen to go with this plain old simple grid format. The reason for the less-than-plain rhomboidal shape is not a conscious design choice. I just had a spare pad of calligraphy paper that’s way too thin for calligraphy – thanks Value Village!

There are plenty of gaps that are for things like commuting and grocery shopping, or just for little outings like a much-needed trip to Dairy Queen. I also need to eat, so there are breaks for meals and the daily supply of caffeine that keeps me going.

At the time of writing this, only my second ever blog post, I  am a couple of weeks into the timetable trial. My thoughts? It’s going surprisingly well. I find that I’m more focused and, even if I don’t stick to it completely, I am assigning myself time every day to get things done. The very existence of this website is thanks to a bit of scheduling magic. By forcing myself to sit and work out all that I needed to do to get this site up and running, I actually managed to do it.

As the weeks go by the whole thing is getting a little tweak here and there as I realise what works best for me – do I find writing is easiest in the morning or afternoon? Do I learn more later in the day or does it sink in better in the morning? This is also helping me more generally to assess what’s really a productive use of time so that I can prioritize accordingly.

So hopefully this is the beginning of the tidy life I’ve always coveted. Isn’t it amazing what a few coloured squares can help you to achieve?

Hellooo there, I’m Ilariona from RF 🙂
Disorganised person here! I love writing lists of things though, like what Sei Shōnagon did with her “Makura no Sōshi” (my Japanese studies are kicking in, LOL). They kind of keep me down to the ground. Not always I do follow them, but still 😛

Trying to be a little organised is better than not being organised at all. I have lots of time to do other things when it’s a dry day at RF (so most of the time, recently).
